Demystifying the Hub

Learn what makes a great hub & how to service yours

Workshop Scope

Hubs are parts of the bike often overlooked although they have an essential role in bike performance. This workshop is aiming at correcting this.
The course will firstly show students how hubs function, what are the forces in play, how hubs are designed and built.
The hands-on part will teach students how to service their hubs in order to obtain optimal performance and prolonged life.
The last part will allow participants to discuss main brands and type specific features and benefits.

Course notes

  • Although the matters covered are technical there are no prerequisites for attendees.
  • Participants are encouraged to take pictures and notes.
  • Refreshments and nibbles will be offered before and after the course.
  • The course will begin no later than 7:00.

    Workshop Outline (2 hours) 

    1. Introduction - Fundamental Components

    • Managing loads (radial, lateral, torsional)
    • Hub design (bracing angles, flange spacing)
    • Key components (hub shell, axle, free hub body, bearings)

    2. Main Types of Hub Systems

    1. Cup + cone
    2. Slip fit axle
    3. Shouldered axle

    3. Servicing

    • Bearing replacement
    • Free hub cleaning + lubrication
    • Preload adjustment
